People frequently ask me, “Why should I buy organic products for my baby?”
First, babies are very susceptible to chemical irritants in clothing. That’s because their skin is five times thinner than an adult’s, so what you place on your baby’s skin is important.
When non-organic cotton is produced, more chemicals are used per unit area than any other crop – accounting for 16% of the world’s pesticides (source: “Picking Cotton Carefully,” Institute of Science in Society, March 2007).
It’s alarming but roughly 150 grams of pesticides and toxic fertilizers are used to grow the cotton for just one t-shirt, which is the equivalent of a cup of sugar (source: Soil Association).
In contrast, organic cotton baby clothing is made from cotton grown without any pesticides or harmful chemical insecticides. And not only is organic cotton healthier for your baby, but the cotton fibers from organically-grown cotton are longer and softer, resulting in more comfortable experience. In addition, organically-grown cotton is earth-friendly because farms and factories are not flushing tons of toxins into the water, soil and the people who grow and harvest the crops.
Speaking from experience, I can attest to the benefits of organic baby products with my own child. When my daughter was 14 months, she developed awful eczema. Her skin was so bad, it looked like she had Leprosy. My sister-in-law, a pediatrician and organic specialist, told me to buy only organic cotton baby clothing, since my daughter’s skin is likely extra sensitive to all the chemicals used in traditional baby clothing.
It made a huge difference.
Organic cotton clothing, combined with oatmeal baths, organic baby skin care products like 100% Unrefined Grade A Shea Butter and Free & Clear Sensitive Skin Products
, and dumping old toys and switching to organic baby toys sent my daughter’s eczema into remission, and we couldn’t be happier.
In closing, when you choose organic baby products for your baby, you are helping to ensure a healthier and happier life for your baby.
